How to Add Registration Marks in Silhouette Studio

Registration marks are the printed targets that tell your Silhouette exactly where the artwork sits, so it cuts on the line instead of a few millimetres off. Here is how to add them properly - and how to skip the setup entirely.

What registration marks do

When you print a design and then load it back into the machine to cut, the paper is almost never in the exact same position it was on screen. Registration marks fix that. The Silhouette's optical sensor finds the printed marks, works out the real position and rotation of the sheet, and shifts every cut to match. Without them, the blade follows the on-screen coordinates and your cut lines drift away from the print.

Turn registration marks on

1. Open your design in Silhouette Studio and make sure the page size matches the paper you will print on (for example A4 or US Letter).
2. Open the Registration Marks panel from the toolbar on the right (the icon with the small target marks).
3. Set the style to Type 1 for a Cameo or Portrait. Older Silhouette SD machines use Type 2.
4. Toggle registration marks to On. Three marks appear - an L-shape in one corner and filled squares in the others.

Keep your artwork inside the safe zone

Silhouette Studio shows hatched or shaded borders once marks are on. Nothing you want printed or cut should sit inside those zones, because the sensor needs a clean, high-contrast area around each mark to read it. Two things trip people up here:

• Artwork too close to a mark. Pull designs in from the edges so no colour bleeds into the exclusion zone around a mark.
• Cut lines crossing a mark. If a cut path runs through the target, the sensor can misread it. Leave a clear margin.

Print, then cut

1. Print the page at 100% scale - never "fit to page", which resizes the marks and throws off the spacing the sensor expects.
2. Load the printed sheet onto your cutting mat in the orientation shown on screen.
3. Send the job to cut. The machine will scan for the marks first; watch that the sensor passes over each one.

When the marks won't scan

If the Silhouette can't find the marks, it is almost always one of these:

• Scaling. The page was printed at anything other than 100%.
• Contrast. Marks printed too light, on coloured or glossy stock, or under strong room lighting that creates glare.
• Position. The sheet is loaded rotated or shifted, so the sensor starts hunting in the wrong place.
• Obstruction. Artwork or a cut line sits inside a mark's exclusion zone.
