How the vinyl calculator works

Vinyl and self-adhesive media are sold by length off a fixed-width roll, so the number that actually drives your cost is the linear metres you consume - not the area of the stickers themselves. This tool lays your stickers out across the roll in a simple grid and works out how far down the roll the job runs.

The calculation

• Stickers per row = how many fit across the usable width, i.e. (roll width − 2 × margin + gap) ÷ (sticker width + gap), rounded down.
• Rows = quantity ÷ stickers per row, rounded up.
• Linear length = 2 × margin + rows × sticker height + gaps between rows.
• Waste compares the sticker area against the full media rectangle you had to feed through the cutter.

With auto-rotate on, the calculator also tries turning your sticker 90° and keeps whichever orientation uses less vinyl - often a meaningful saving on rectangular shapes.

Tips to use less vinyl

• Reduce the gap to the minimum your cutter reliably handles - even 1 mm across a big run adds up.
• Match the roll width to your sticker size so you waste as little edge as possible.
• Keep margins tight but within your machine's registration and grip tolerances.
• Nest odd shapes by hand where you can - this estimate assumes a straight grid.
